In "Alien Landscape 5" Daniel Ketelhut explores the delicate balance between "concealment and revelation", a core tenet of his "Karma and Rebirth" series. The composition is grounded in an earthy, neutral palette of ochres and grays, which serves as a quiet stage for more intense, rhythmic bursts of crimson and teal. These small, opaque passages act as focal points of energy within a sea of transparent, glazed layers.
Reflecting the Buddhist doctrine of "dependent origination", the painting's biomorphic forms appear to emerge from the ghosts of previous layers, showing how the "past" of the canvas informs its "present." The prominent use of "dripping paint" and loose, gestural linework reinforces a sense of liquid flux, inviting the viewer into a subconscious world where reality is an ever-shifting construct.
