The substantial hardwood case has developed a warm, deep patina that reflects generations of use. The upper section opens to reveal the writing interior, thoughtfully fitted with six small figured-maple drawers, ten open pigeonholes and flanking document compartments. A fold-down writing surface with green felt insert creates a functional workspace while allowing the desk to close into a handsome cabinet form when not in use.

Traditional construction details include narrow hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes and visible cabinetmaker’s scribe and tool marks. Turned feet and paneled doors complete the restrained Early American design.

The contrast between the richly figured maple interior and the warm exterior wood is particularly striking and makes this a distinctive example of early American functional furniture.
