This charming traditional interior oil painting, titled "Interiör", was created by the Norwegian artist, from Moss, Karl Vilhelm Anstensen (1913-2001). Known for his atmospheric interior scenes and landscapes, Anstensen often captured the quiet, everyday moments of domestic life.
The artwork is executed in an Impressionistic style, characterized by visible, textured brushstrokes and a soft, diffused lighting that emphasizes the warmth of the interior. The artist’s signature, "K.V. Anstensen," along with the date 1978, is visible in the lower right corner. This composition evokes a sense of peaceful solitude and intellectual focus, typical of Anstensen's later-period interior studies.
The artist often painted on very coarse canvases, such as jute, using visible, broken brushstrokes that give the piece a tactile, vibrating atmosphere. Anstensen employs a thick, painterly brushstroke typical of Impressionism, emphasizing the play of light over fine detail. The color palette is warm and naturalistic, dominated by greens, browns, and soft yellows, which creates a serene and contemplative atmosphere.
Anstensen painted his first oil painting at the age of eight. He attended the Norwegian School of Crafts and Art from 1929 to 1931. There he studied with famous artists such as Kai Fjell and Kåre Espolin Johnsen . In 1935 he studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo under Professor Halfdan Strøm .
Anstensen spent several decades on study trips to France , the Netherlands and Italy. He and his family had many painting trips during the summer months to places such as Telemark , Western Norway , Lofoten or Smögen on the Swedish coast.
He was known by many Mossers for his paintings and many pictures of the artist can be found here, but he was also a popular artist on the Swedish west coast. He was known for his stylish landscapes, flower motifs, and interior, portrait studies.
This canvas measures 15 and 1/8 inches wide by 18 and 1/8 inches high framed to a dimension of 22 1/2 inches high by 25 and 1/2 inches high. This oil painting is painted on coarse canvas and is in very good condition. The canvas is tight and intact and without repairs. The period vintage frame appears to be original and is in good vintage condition with a few areas of pitting on the gold tone. It is a thick wooden period frame painted in a two-tone gold pattern. I believe the back half of the frame has been refurbished and repainted at some point as there is updated hardware on the back.
