This whimsical Clay leaf inspired by Henri Matisse's leaf motifs was made by the Swedish sculptor-artist Vivianne Geijer. This popular swedish sculptor was born in 1941 and has spent her career working mostly in clay and bronze. Her pieces are sought after and actively collected with consistent auction growth. This clay sculpture is mounted and displayed in a wooden case behind plexiglass. The wooden box measures 7 and 1/2 inches high by 5 and 1/2 inches wide by 3 and 1/2 inches deep. It is signed, dated and titled on the front bottom. It is in very good condition and retains the original swedish auction tag and artist biography on the back written in swedish.
This would be a thoughtful gift for any Matisse enthusiast or lover of organic art forms. Like many art pieces it tells a story. This sculpture stands as a reminder of the end of Matisse's life when he was bedridden and unable to paint so he begain to cut leaf shapes out of paper. The leaf motifs served as a therapeutic and creative escape and allowed him to create and construct a vibrant garden all around himself, while lying in bed, using paper cut-outs. This sculpture by Vivianne Geijer is an ode to the symbolism of life and nature and the importance of surrounding yourself with the things you love-no matter what.
This sculpture is in very good to near perfect condition with minimal shelf and handling wear. It is ready to be displayed. I purchased this at a Swedish Art Auction House so this is the first time it has been listed for sale in the states.
