Created by Couroc of Monterey, California, this striking vintage serving tray celebrates the enduring symbols of American freedom through one of the nation's most recognizable emblems—the American eagle. Crafted in Couroc's signature satin-black phenolic with intricate hand-inlaid details, it is both a functional serving piece and a distinctive work of American decorative art.
At the center of the composition, a majestic eagle spreads its wings in a bold and imaginative design. One side is rendered as a graceful brass outline while the other is richly detailed with wood-grain inlay, creating a compelling balance between graphic simplicity and natural texture. A patriotic shield in red, white, and blue adorns the eagle's breast, while brass accents highlight the craftsmanship for which Couroc became renowned.
The result is a powerful expression of American identity—simultaneously modernist and traditional—capturing the optimism and pride that defined the nation's Bicentennial era.
Originally produced during America's Bicentennial celebrations of the 1970s, this tray stands today as both a collectible piece of Couroc craftsmanship and a tangible reminder of the nation's historic 200th anniversary. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, these Bicentennial designs have taken on renewed significance. Additional patriotic Couroc trays from this commemorative series are also available in my shop.
