Issued around 1850, this finely executed print offers a wonderfully intimate glimpse into rural Swedish domestic life during the nineteenth century. The scene depicts an elderly woman seated beside a hearth, absorbed in reading a large book. Around her are the simple comforts of a traditional Scandinavian home: a sleeping cat on a bench, a teapot and cup on a small table, wooden floorboards, household utensils, and the warm glow of a modest interior. The composition is remarkable for its quiet dignity and humanity, transforming an everyday moment into a touching meditation on learning, contemplation, and domestic contentment. Pehr Wickenberg (1812–1846) ranks among the most respected figures of Swedish Romantic art. Though best known for his atmospheric winter landscapes, he also produced genre scenes that celebrated ordinary life in Sweden. Following his untimely death, Albert Bonnier published *Album Efter Taflor* to preserve his artistic legacy. The complete publication contained a portrait frontispiece, decorative title page, and a series of lithographs depicting scenes from Swedish life, of which this plate is one of the most attractive. The lithograph was produced with exceptional tonal richness, capturing the textures of fabric, wood, stone, and light with remarkable subtlety. The careful rendering of the interior creates a sense of warmth and authenticity that continues to resonate with modern viewers. Today, prints from the Wickenberg Album are highly desirable to collectors of Scandinavian art, nineteenth-century genre subjects, and historic depictions of everyday life. Its quiet narrative, decorative appeal, and connection to one of Sweden's most admired Romantic painters make this an excellent piece for collectors, interior designers, or anyone seeking authentic Scandinavian antique artwork. Condition Report: Framing Suggestions: This print would display beautifully in a walnut, ebonized, or gilt frame with a warm ivory museum mat. The subdued monochromatic palette complements both traditional Scandinavian interiors and contemporary spaces. Particularly attractive when grouped with other nineteenth-century Swedish genre prints or works from the Album Efter Taflor series. This offering is for an original nineteenth-century lithograph, not a modern reproduction. Any framed room visualizations are intended solely to illustrate potential display options and may not accurately represent the print's exact scale relative to the frame or interior setting. The print is sold unframed. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Pehr Wickenberg, published by Albert Bonnier, Stockholm, Sweden, c. 1850. See less
