This rare set of wall lamps, produced in sweden during the 1950s, represents a sophisticated example of custom scandinavian lighting design with a unique historical provenance. Originally created for the gävle theater, these fixtures were part of a unified lighting scheme that included ceiling lamps and other bespoke elements tailored to the theater’s interior. Following a renovation in the 1980s, the lamps were carefully deinstalled, preserving their original condition and enabling their transition from institutional use to collectible design objects. The construction combines lacquered metal with dual-layered glass components, reflecting the mid-century scandinavian design emphasis on material clarity, function, and refined ornamentation. The metal framework features a circular wall plate from which an angled arm projects, supporting a vertically oriented lighting unit. The metal components retain a warm, patinated lacquer finish in a golden tone, the result of natural aging processes that accentuate the period character of the fixtures. At the center of the composition is a cylindrical frosted glass diffuser, enclosed within a larger, clear glass globe. This double-glass configuration serves both aesthetic and technical purposes: the frosted cylinder softens the light source, producing a diffuse ambient illumination, while the outer globe enhances the overall sculptural form. Integrated into the base structure are vertical slits in the metal, offering both visual detail and secondary light diffusion, allowing subtle rays of light to escape horizontally.
the lamps measure 38 cm in width, 46 cm in depth, and 65 cm in height (15 × 18.1 × 25.6 inches), giving them a commanding presence suitable for theatrical or architectural interiors. Despite their substantial dimensions, the composition maintains a balanced silhouette with careful attention to proportion and symmetry. Age-related wear is visible, particularly as a soft patina and minor abrasions on the metal surfaces, consistent with their decades of use and storage. These marks contribute to the authenticity and historical value of the pieces. The combination of form, material, and cultural context positions these lamps as notable examples of swedish public lighting design from the mid-20th century, offering insight into the aesthetic values and craftsmanship associated with postwar scandinavian modernism. Provenance designed specifically for the gävle theater.
