Once known as the center of New York City nightlife, the El Morocco was the place to see and be seen. Founded in 1931 by John Perona, El Morocco was a speakeasy turned supper club that attracted high-profile patrons like Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio, Elizabeth Taylor, and more. The club boasted a champagne room for private dining, iconic zebra-striped booths, and two orchestras that kept the crowd dancing until the wee hours. The El Morocco closed its doors in 1969, but its memory lives on.
This richly illustrated catalogue documents the contents of the estate of John Perona, the legendary proprietor of New York City's famed El Morocco nightclub, one of the most celebrated social destinations of the 1930s through 1950s. The sale featured an exceptional array of antiques, fine art, decorative objects, personal effects, fashion, photographs, and rare memorabilia associated with Perona and the storied nightclub.
Inside are detailed lot descriptions, historical photographs, biographical information on John Perona, and numerous illustrations of items offered in the auction, providing a fascinating glimpse into one of New York's most iconic nightlife institutions.
