Overview
Exhibiting an exquisite warmth and a masterful approach to mid-century modern mid-century expressionism, this large-scale original oil painting is by the listed American artist Irving Rosenzweig (1915–1983). In contrast to his bustling city scenes, this piece features an intimate, soothing figurative composition. The palette is remarkably sophisticated, utilizing a grounded harmony of earthy ochres, rich terracottas, warm creams, and subtle accents of teal and soft rose.
The artist utilizes bold, structural color blocking and fluid palette knife work to create a beautiful balance between figuration and abstraction. The canvas is signed by the artist in a vibrant red script in the lower right corner.
About the Artist
Irving Rosenzweig was a prominent post-war painter who studied at the prestigious Pratt Institute and the Art Students League before continuing his training internationally in Florence, Paris, and Barcelona. Known for his soft-spoken nature, his artwork beautifully reflects a sense of calm strength. Rosenzweig’s career achieved significant institutional merit, notably culminating in his work being selected for the landmark 1967 Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Painting at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Framing & Condition
The painting is beautifully presented in its original, high-quality vintage wood frame featuring a subtle mottled metallic finish and a classic textured linen liner. Both the canvas and the frame are in very good vintage condition. The paint layer is stable, secure, and entirely intact with no paint loss. The original frame shows only minor, age-appropriate wear and light patina that perfectly validates its 1960s heritage. Ready to hang.
Design Notes
With its horizontal orientation and warm, inviting color story, this oversized work is an ideal choice for placement above a mid-century sideboard, a living room sofa, or anchoring a dining space. It brings an immediate, authentic post-war gallery aesthetic to any modern, minimalist, or transitional interior.
