:
Oil on canvas depicting a Dolomitic landscape with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo mountain group emerging at the center of the composition. The rocky peaks, characterized by sharp and vertical profiles, stand out against a sky animated by light veils and atmospheric transitions. In the foreground, the body of water of lake Antorno reflects the mountainous mass and the underlying wooded area, creating a balanced relationship between natural elements and compositional structure.
The painting is executed with a compact, layered application, alternating dense paint areas with more fluid passages, particularly in the sky and reflections. The color palette ranges across deep greens, browns, cool blues, and warm highlights on the sunlit rock faces. Signed lower right.
Upon request, available with a custom-made antique fir wood frame crafted in our restoration workshop.
Notes on the artist:
Arno Lemke
was a German painter active during the 20th century, best known for his production of Alpine mountain landscapes inspired by the regions of Bavaria and the Tyrol. His artistic training developed within the Central European tradition, where direct observation of nature and painting from life form the foundation of artistic language.
Throughout his career, Lemke devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting, favoring high-mountain subjects: rocky massifs, snow-capped peaks, Alpine valleys, and wooded views. In his work, the mountain is never a mere backdrop, but the absolute protagonist, interpreted as a living, changing organism shaped by light and atmospheric conditions.
His stylistic signature is distinguished by an energetic, material brushwork, often applied with a palette knife, which gives solidity and physical presence to rocky surfaces. At the same time, Lemke demonstrates a refined chromatic sensitivity in the treatment of skies and distant planes, rendered with light glazes and atmospheric tones that enhance spatial depth.
Arno Lemke’s works enjoyed solid circulation within the European art market, particularly in Germany and Alpine regions, where they were appreciated by collectors tied to the landscape tradition. Today, his paintings remain valued for their balance between naturalistic fidelity and painterly interpretation, qualities that make his Alpine views both recognizable and visually compelling.
