The body is of high-quality English manufacture, probably porcelain or stone china.

The central cartouche is painted with exotic birds in a landscape, one of the most recognisable decorative themes associated with Worcester and the influential workshop of James Giles. Rich cobalt-blue colouring, hand-painted floral reserves and extensive gilding combine to create an object of considerable decorative sophistication.

The boldly modelled openwork handles are richly gilded and carefully integrated into the design, enhancing both the visual balance and the presence of the piece. The underside bears a red monogram-like mark that may relate to the decorator or workshop responsible for the painted decoration. Combining strong decorative impact, fine hand-painted detail and links to an important English decorative tradition, this tray would appeal equally to collectors and interior designers.
