"Chess" is one of Javier Mariscal's most recognizable and representative designs, produced by Akaba in Spain around 1992. Conceived within the context of the creative effervescence that characterized Barcelona in the early 1990s, the project perfectly reflects the designer's visual language, marked by humor, formal synthesis, and a playful approach to industrial design.
Far from reproducing the traditional shapes of chess, Mariscal transforms each piece into a small sculpture of architectural and anthropomorphic character. Through elementary geometries and a deliberately minimalist aesthetic, he manages to endow each figure with its own identity, making the set a work that transcends its function as a board game to enter the realm of collectible design.
This particular example includes the original board, the metal storage case, and the complete set of pieces. The presence of the original individual packaging for each piece is especially noteworthy, an element that is rarely preserved intact and that forms an integral part of the graphic concept developed for the project.
The monochromatic palette and purity of form demonstrate Mariscal's ability to integrate disciplines as diverse as graphic design, illustration, industrial design, and sculpture. Its strong visual presence allows the piece to function as both a chess set and a decorative object and collector's item.
Javier Mariscal's works are part of important international collections and occupy a prominent place in the recent history of Spanish design. "The Chess Set" remains one of his most emblematic projects and a testament to the cultural dynamism associated with Barcelona in the early 1990s.
A particularly interesting piece for collectors of postmodern design, contemporary Spanish design, and graphic objects from the late 20th century. This piece has an attribution mark,
