Hand-painted in oxblood red and yellow blooms on an ivory ground, with passages of orange, teal, and black all outlined in gold, this pair of Gouda vases has been mounted as table lamps and finished with new ivory pleated silk shades. The cloisonné-like gold outlining and stylized florals are hallmarks of the Dutch Art Deco painting that made Gouda ware collectible on both sides of the Atlantic.
Both vases carry the full hand-painted marks of Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, the Gouda factory, including the pattern name "Lucette," the house device, a painter's monogram, and the factory's dating symbol — one base dated 1926, the other 1927, a year apart, as matched pairs of the period often were. The earthenware bodies and the "Made in Holland" export mark place them firmly in the factory's most sought-after decade.
Newly wired for U.S. use; international plug customization available at no charge. Height includes the shade.
About the Maker
Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland was founded in Gouda in 1898 and grew into one of the most important Dutch art potteries of the early twentieth century. Its hand-painted earthenware — matte glazes, bold florals, and the gold-outlined Art Deco patterns of the 1920s — was exported widely as "Gouda ware." The firm received a royal designation in 1930 and continued production into the 1960s. Pieces are dated by a symbol system the factory used through the 1920s, which allows this pair to be placed to the exact year.
