The composition was drawn by the renowned sporting artist John Ferneley and lithographed by the distinguished artist and printmaker Maxim Gauci, one of the foremost lithographers working in Britain during the first half of the nineteenth century. Printed by the celebrated London lithographic firm of Charles Hullmandel, whose workshop was responsible for some of the finest sporting, natural history, and topographical prints of the period. The print depicts Spankaway in a calm landscape setting, emphasizing the horse's elegant proportions, muscular build, and refined breeding. Ferneley's influence is evident in the careful anatomical accuracy and dignified presentation of the animal. Sporting portraits such as this were highly sought after by horse owners, breeders, and racing enthusiasts, serving both as records of important horses and as decorative works of art. John Ferneley (1782–1860) was among England's most respected equestrian painters and received commissions from leading aristocratic patrons throughout the country. His works document the golden age of British horse breeding and racing, a period when sporting art reached exceptional popularity. Maxim Gauci (1774–1854), originally from Malta, was a master lithographer whose technical skill helped elevate lithography into an accepted artistic medium in Britain. Charles Hullmandel (1789–1850) was one of the pioneers of British lithographic printing and collaborated with many of the most important artists of his era. Portraits of named racehorses remain highly collectible today, particularly when produced by notable sporting artists and printers. This print offers an attractive combination of equestrian history, fine lithographic craftsmanship, and nineteenth-century sporting culture. Condition: Age-related toning and light staining. Minor creasing and handling marks, particularly near the margins. Small edge imperfections and paper wear consistent with age. Please study the image carefully. Visible plate and publication margins remain present. Framing tips: This print displays beautifully in a dark walnut, ebonized, or traditional mahogany frame with an ivory or warm cream mount. A narrow gilt liner can enhance the refined nineteenth-century sporting character while complementing the monochrome lithographic image. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Maxim Gauci (Malta, active in London) after John Ferneley (England), printed by Charles Hullmandel, London, circa 1840. See less
