An original vintage photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's landmark The North American Indian. Mescal Camp – Apache is a 1903 view of an Apache encampment set into the brushy hills of the Arizona high desert — domed, hide-and-thatch wickiups scattered across the slope, a figure and horse at left, the whole scene held in the soft sepia light Curtis drew out of the landscape. It's an early, documentary image from the project's first volume, a record of everyday Apache life rather than a posed portrait.
From Volume 1 (facing page 28) of The North American Indian, printed after Curtis's copyright photograph of 1903. It is printed on Japon Vellum — one of the three handmade papers Curtis used for the work, a smooth, warm-toned Japanese sheet that holds fine detail beautifully.
Titled in the plate lower left (MESCAL CAMP – APACHE), with the 1903 copyright inscribed below the image. A single-sheet gravure with a crisp, original plate impression visible in the paper.
Provenance: The Christopher G. Cardozo Collection — the foremost private collection of Curtis's work — with the collection's inventory number (CCI-3422) in pencil to the verso. Currently in Private Colorado Collection
