Don Albinson was an American industrial designer who is best known today for his pioneering work in postwar furniture design and his long-standing collaboration with Charles and Ray Eames. Albinson’s work played a crucial role in the design and development of numerous iconic Eames furniture pieces; as a result, he is often referred to as “Eames’ right-hand man.” Albinson began his career by studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and subsequently worked at the Eames design studio. His expertise in construction and manufacturing was essential to the development of iconic designs such as the DCM (Dining Chair Metal), the “Aluminum Group” seating series, and the famous Eames Lounge Chair. In 1964, Albinson left the Eames office to become Design Director at Knoll International. Shortly after joining the company in 1965, he designed the Knoll 1601 Stack Chair offered here. The design embodies the functional, minimalist aesthetic of postwar modernism and symbolizes the shift toward industrially manufactured seating for public and private spaces. Albinson worked at Knoll until 1971 and subsequently taught industrial design at the University of California, Los Angeles, until his retirement. Don Albinson died in Minneapolis in 2008.
