This beautiful portrait of a woman sewing is signed by the Mid-Century French artist Marius Woulfart (b.1905). From a young age, Woulfart trained artistically with his artist father Max Woulfart. He described himself as a "sentimentalist painter" - influenced mostly by the times and fashion. Most of his oeuvre could be described as Expressionist. This term refers to the movement which manipulates the visual elements of an image to convey intense subjective feelings. In Expressionist art, color is highly intense, brushwork is free and application is heavy or textured. Woulfart did create works in different genres throughout his career. In the words of the journalist and writer Marcel Sauvage, author of the biography of Joséphine Baker: "Woulfart, whose palette is of an astonishing richness, manifests an increasingly rare control. His portraits are first-rate and God knows we have few authentic portraitists today; his flowers are like smartly bloomed fireworks. He is one of those who nourish, with strength and brilliance, with exemplary perseverance, the pictorial material for the joy and recognition of all true art lovers.
Woulfart's works appear in numerous public institutions and collections including many purchases by the State of France and the City of Paris as well as the Montreal Museum in Canada, the Palm Beach Museum in Florida, United States and French museums in Périgueux, Angoulême and several others. Woulfart's art appears as well in many prestigious private collections both in France and abroad including that of the Princess of Monaco. Comes with acid free mat and backing
