Edward Sokol born in 1945 began his formal art training at New York’s High School of Music and Art, and Hunter College, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. Upon graduation, Sokol taught elementary school while pursuing a career as a working artist. At the end of one year, and after only a few art shows, two New York art galleries offered to represent him. He then began working full time as an artist and his list of collectors began to grow.
It has been said that, "At the heart of Sokol's paintings is the vision of a happy human being. He combines his rich, pure colors with a vivid, personal record of places and things; happy responses, to a world colored by his own delight in the visual experience.” His work is highly recognizable, adding to the appeal for many collectors. Over 6 thousand of Sokol's paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures and limited edition prints are in corporate, public, museums and private collections around the world.
This acrylic on canvas painting dated 1979 is titled "Across the Brooklyn bridge #2". It is a whimsical interpretation of the Brooklyn Bridge, the East River and the buroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The painting highlights some easily recognizeable New York landmarks such as the "Gone but not forgotten "Twin Towers, the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings. The canvas measures 36 inches by 36 inches framed to a dimension of 38.5 inches by 38.5 inches. It is in very good condition. The canvas is tight and intact without repairs. It has a newer two-tone silver and black wooden frame that is also in very good to near perfect condition.
I have owned this painting for 25 years and it has been well cared for. It has hung out of direct sunlight, in a smoke free, temperature controlled environment. In 1979 the artist wrote a personal inscription on the back of the canvas stretcher to the first owners of the painting, It reads- For Cathy and Fortune Pope, I am glad you share my vision of the city... signed Edward Sokol and dated 5/6/1979. Please refer to last photo for inscription. It is signed Edward Sokol Front lower right corner and again signed, dated and titled on the back.
Edward Sokol's Brooklyn Bridge and NYC series art is popular among collectors. A few years ago the "Across the Brooklyn Bridge #1" painting showing a different view of the bridge was listed and sold for $6,000.00 at a gallery and currently his Inner City painting showing another different view of the Brooklyn Bridge and skyline is listed at Rogallery for $7,500.00. This would make a great investment and complement a new or existing art collection.
