This painting dated 1969 is titled sunflowers and is by the popular swedish artist Brita Streijffert (1917-2006). Streijffert was a prominent Swedish visual artist and printmaker known for her vibrant, stylized depictions of nature. Her contemporary style bridged modernism with the emotions of expressionism.
Her work is celebrated for its graphic simplicity and clear, expressive color palette. Her portfolio frequently features nature-inspired themes. This painting is part of a series where she explored sunflowers in various arrangements. The painting's flattened perspective and simplified shapes is a common trait in Scandinavian modern art. The sunflowers are rendered with a focus on form and rhythm rather than realistic depth. Her use of distinct outlines, textured brush strokes and flat areas of color give it a graphic almost textile -like quality which was popular in Swedish modern art of the mid -20th century.
The vibrant, saturated color palette features the iconic, high contrast colors popular in late 1960s design- bright Yellows, deep ochra centers, and muted sage green leaves against a pale, neutral background.
Her expressionistic impasto brushwork highlights petals that were created with thick, decisive strokes that gives the flowers a textured almost shaggy appearance. A repetitive rhythmic pattern of flower heads at different heights creates a sense of natural abundance that feels both playful and architectural.
Her sunflower paintings from this period are well-regarded and collected. Streijffert studied at Otte Sköld's painting school 1938–1941 and Isaac Grünewald's painting school in Stockholm 1942–1943. During and after her studies, she made study trips to France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia. During the 1940s-1960s her art was exhibited in both solo and group shows in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Uppsala Sweden. Her work remains a staple in Scandinavian modernism and frequently appears at auction houses specializing in Swedish art.
