A beautiful mid-century watercolor from one of the Pacific Northwest’s most accomplished artists, Paul Morgan Gustin, depicts a dazzling underwater world populated by starfish, shells, fish, and aquatic plant life. Gustin’s remarkable ability to interpret the natural world through both observation and imagination is on full display here, balancing recognizable marine elements with an increasingly modern, expressive approach to composition.
Paul Morgan Gustin (1886–1974) was born at Fort Vancouver, Washington, and raised in Denver, where he studied under Jean Mannheim before returning to Seattle in 1906. He became nationally recognized for his atmospheric depictions of Mount Rainier and the landscapes of the Olympic and Cascade ranges, helping to establish the Pacific Northwest as an important center of American art. Gustin worked across a range of subjects and mediums, demonstrating the versatility that made him one of the region’s most respected painters. His work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Seattle Art Museum and the Frye Art Museum, among other notable public and private collections.
Signed "Gustin 1950" bottom center left.
