Known as a Bansonyi serpent, sculptures of this form were historically used in important community ceremonies—particularly male initiation rites—where the powerful serpent spirit appeared during masked performances to symbolize protection, spiritual authority, and the life-giving forces of renewal and fertility. The tall undulating form evokes the movement of a living snake, while the stylized face features wide circular eyes representing the watchful presence of the spirit, believed to guard the community and oversee sacred rituals. Diamond patterns along the body reference serpent scales and protective markings, and the bold central ridge running through the face symbolizes the spiritual axis connecting earthly and ancestral realms. Mounted on a custom iron stand for display, this sculptural example retains its beautifully aged surface and painted decoration dating to the early–mid 20th century, and today stands as a powerful piece of African ceremonial art and an exceptional sculptural statement.
