A stunning, authentic piece of mid-century modern design history. This c. 1958 XL table lamp features a beautiful combination of textures and materials that perfectly encapsulates postwar California modernism. The hand-woven shade by the iconic textile designer Maria Kipp utilizes her signature combination of natural split bamboo/reed intertwined with thick textured chenille and warm earth-toned fibers. It is is highly coveted by collectors and retains its beautiful original colors and structure. The lamp, manufactured by Quartite Creative Corp. has a white, rope textured ceramic body accented by a solid walnut neck and base. Born in Germany, Maria Kipp was a trailblazing textile engineer and designer. She was the first woman to graduate from the prestigious State Academy for the Textile Industry in Plauen, Germany (1923). After immigrating to America, she founded Maria Kipp Handweaves (1931) in Los Angeles, which operated successfully for six decades. Her tactile, hand-woven draperies, upholstery, and lampshades defined the aesthetic of postwar California modernism. Renowned modernist architects and designers like Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and Paul László explicitly sought out and incorporated her textiles into their custom architectural projects.
Her coveted lampshades are distinctively recognized by their structured weaving of natural materials—such as raffia, jute, and split reed—intertwined with thick textural chenille, wool, or metallic threads.
