Born in Germany, Maria Kipp was a trailblazing textile engineer and designer. She was the first woman to graduate from the prestigious State Academy for the Textile Industry in Plauen, Germany (1923). After immigrating to America, she founded Maria Kipp Handweaves (1931) in Los Angeles, which operated successfully for six decades. Her tactile, hand-woven draperies, upholstery, and lampshades defined the aesthetic of postwar California modernism. Renowned modernist architects and designers like Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and Paul László explicitly sought out and incorporated her textiles into their custom architectural projects.
