None Such Thing Little Nan
RP, c. 1990s
RP’s None Such Thing Little Nan is a psychologically charged work that uses the visual language of childhood illustration, surrealism, and dream logic to explore fear. The composition is anchored by a deeply human moment: a child hiding in the lap of a seated adult. This tucked-away posture gives the work its emotional focal point. The child’s face is obscured, removing individual expression and allowing the physicality to carry the meaning. Fear is not shown through a theatrical scream or dramatic pose, but through withdrawal. The child turns away from the world, seeking safety in the parent’s body.
Yet the parent is not presented as a complete solution. The adult figure is pale, loosely rendered, and almost ghostlike, blending into the surrounding space. This creates an interesting tension. The lap offers protection, but the image does not feel secure. The environment has already become uncanny. The chair, the floor, and the open architectural background seem to dissolve into streaks of orange, yellow, red, and pale blue. RP’s use of color gives the scene a flowing, unstable quality, as though the room is being overtaken by a flood of feeling.
The fish are central to this transformation. They populate the composition in a way that feels both playful and disturbing. Their small eyes and softened bodies give them a childlike simplicity, but their sheer number makes them unsettling. They appear as dream-symbols: strange, recurring presences that have entered the domestic space without explanation. Some seem embedded in the currents of color; others rest like remnants scattered across a shoreline. This ambiguity allows the fish to function as both creatures and emotional objects. They may represent fear, imagination, memory, or the strange logic of a child’s nightmare.
The large black form near the center deepens this unease. Its mass and darkness disrupt the otherwise delicate linework and pale washes. It feels heavier than everything around it, almost as though it has been dropped into the dream from another world. The form’s ambiguity is important. Because it is not fully identifiable, it becomes more threatening. It is a fish, a shell, a shadow, a creature, and an object all at once. RP allows uncertainty to become the source of tension.
The small figures along the margins of the scene further complicate the narrative. These tiny people appear almost incidental, yet they are crucial to the atmosphere. They turn the image into a stage filled with miniature witnesses and side events. Their presence suggests that the central drama is not isolated; the entire world of the picture is alive with peripheral activity. At the same time, their scale makes them feel powerless. They observe, gesture, or drift through the scene, but they do not intervene. Like the fish, they seem to belong to the logic of dreams, where unrelated figures appear with mysterious importance.
Formally, the work balances delicacy and disturbance. The pale washes and fine lines create an airy, almost fragile surface, while the black central mass and fiery bands of color introduce emotional intensity. The contrast between the hidden child and the expanding dream-world gives the piece its strength. RP does not illustrate a clear story so much as a state of mind. None Such Thing Little Nan becomes an image of childhood fear made visible: the moment when the adults say there is nothing to be afraid of, but the imagination has already filled the room with evidence to the contrary.
