Dimensions: height 23 cm, diameter 33 cm. Weight: 44 kg.

This set consists of two heavy round stones that were placed on top of each other. The lower stone remained fixed, while the upper stone was turned by means of a wooden handle. The material to be ground was added through the opening; through the rotating movement, it was crushed and ground between the two stones. The worn grooves and radial patterns in the surface clearly reveal the original function of the mill.

The stones have a strong sculptural presence, defined by their dark porous natural stone, rough edges, visible wear and subtle white mineral speckles. The old iron and wooden remains in the centre enhance their authentic character and give the set a quiet, archaic strength.

Today, these ishi-usu are especially decorative. They work beautifully as a sober statement piece in an interior, as a pedestal for an object or plant, or as a powerful accent in a Japanese garden, courtyard or wabi-sabi outdoor space.
