Bakre was a founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group along with F. N. Souza, S. H. Raza, K. H. Ara, H. A. Gade, and M. F. Husain. Bakre received a degree in art and stone carving from Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay and was a pilot with the Air Force during the Second World War. In 1951, he moved to London to pursue his career more as a painter than a sculptor, later returning to India in 1975 where he became a recluse. Bakre's work is sought after today and rare to find.
