A writing desk (secrétaire à abattant) in the louis-philippe style, a mid-19th-century interior design aesthetic that combined bourgeois practicality with a calm, understated veneer effect. The tall, rectangular structure is clearly proportioned and subtly structured; the mirrored flame-patterned veneer unifies the front into a serene, closed surface. Historical context: the secretary desk with a drop-down writing surface originated as a writing and storage unit for the bourgeois household, combining a work surface with a structured interior for correspondence, documents, and small valuables. During the louis-philippe period, a calmer, flatly veneered design language replaced the austere, representative style of the empire period; writing desks of this type were found in parlors, living rooms, or studies and served for organized storage. The internal structure, differentiated by small drawers and concealed compartments, is characteristic of this type of furniture.
features: two secret compartments in the interior, accessible behind or beneath the central drawer. Light-colored, figured interior (maple) with several small drawers and removable compartments contrasts with the darker exterior.
design: architecturally structured body with rounded front edges and a straight, robust base on ball feet, crowned by a profiled gray marble top. The design follows the louis philippe principle of flat, planar effect: continuous flamed veneer, sparing use of hardware, and emphasized horizontals. Figurative escutcheons with roosters and column motifs provide accents, serving as the only ornamental elements to interrupt the otherwise calm surface. Function: formerly used as a writing and storage unit for correspondence and documents, today the piece is suitable as a decorative writing and collector's item, as storage furniture with a structured interior, or as a striking standalone piece against a wall.
dimensions: h 145 cm × w 95 cm × d 40–45 cm. Material and condition: veneered body (flamed walnut veneer), interior in light, figured maple, gray marble top, figurative bronze fittings, green writing surface covering. In age-appropriate condition with visible patina and age-related signs of wear, particularly on the writing surface covering. Professionally inspected and restored by kastellan: cleaned and treated appropriately for the material, surfaces inspected and gently refinished, structurally checked, stable and functional. Signs of age and use are part of its historical character.
