The design appears clearly structured and calmly proportioned, with a balanced relationship between the applied baluster gallery, the profiled cornice, and the mirrored surface framed by slender half-columns. Historical Context: In the late 19th century, bourgeois domestic culture increasingly drew on historical styles; the Neo-Renaissance drew inspiration from the forms of the Italian and French Renaissance. Representative wall and fireplace mirrors were standard features in salons, dining rooms, and reception rooms during this period, where they diffused the available light and visually enlarged the space. Industrial production allowed for the mass production of carved and turned elements, making such mirrors widespread even outside the aristocracy. Features: Applied baluster gallery with turned balusters and urn-shaped corner finials. Faceted, polished mirror glass, framed laterally by turned half-columns on pedestals with diamond-shaped rustication. Design: The design follows the formal canon of the Neo-Renaissance in the style of Henri II. Characteristic features include the strict vertical articulation by the lateral half-columns, the strongly profiled cornice, and the carved frieze with a continuous leaf and wave motif. The turned balusters, the urn-shaped finials, and the diamond-shaped rustication of the base combine to form a symmetrically constructed, architecturally conceived frame. Function: Originally designed as a permanently installed wall or fireplace mirror, mounted above a console or mantelpiece. Today, the mirror can also be used freestanding, leaning against the wall, or in a classic hanging configuration, for example, in a hallway, living room, or dressing room. Dimensions: Height 127 cm, Width 87 cm, Depth 10 cm. Material and Condition: Frame made of walnut, stained dark. Mirror surface made of faceted, ground mirror glass. Overall, it is in good condition for its age, with a gentle patina and age-related signs of wear; the mirror glass shows some age-related deposits. These signs of age and wear are part of its historical character. See less
