This 1940s wardrobe embodies the best of mass-produced art deco: rigorous geometry, a tall and slender silhouette, and a complete absence of superfluous ornamentation. Repainted in a soft green, it fits equally well in a contemporary bedroom or a period home.
features: the wardrobe is distinguished by its six-panel molded door with a carefully hierarchical composition: two large vertical panels at the top, a row of three small horizontal rectangles in the middle—a subtle nod to the decorative vocabulary of art deco—and then two large vertical panels at the bottom, symmetrical to the top. This interplay of solids and voids, achieved through raised molding, gives the door a rare graphic depth for a mass-produced piece. The base houses a drawer with simple metal handles. Inside, the wardrobe offers four shelves (height not adjustable). Its tall and narrow silhouette makes it easy to place, even in small spaces.
restoration: the wardrobe has been completely sanded, treated against wood-boring insects, and then painted in farrow & ball's pigeon green.
condition: heavy, solid, and stable on its feet.
dimensions: w80 x d45 x h195 cm.
closet: w76.5 x d40 x h165 cm. Spacing between shelves from top to bottom: 42-28-28-28-31 cm.
drawer: w65 x h12 cm.
a wardrobe that wisely avoids trying too hard. The geometry does the work, the color does the rest. For a bedroom that wants character without being ostentatious.
