Among Japan's most venerated auspicious symbols — abundance, longevity, the grace of giving — woven here in heavy gold across midnight-black silk. Against a deep midnight-black silk ground, the tabane-noshi is rendered in heavy gold thread, its flowing ribbons embroidered with sakura cherry blossoms, kiku chrysanthemums and kikkō tortoiseshell geometry in vermilion, azure and white. The black gives the composition its authority. The gold gives it its luminance.
