The two compositions depict dramatic ruins of classical architecture set against idealized landscapes, in keeping with the style that characterized Roman painting of the late 17th century. Monumental columns, archaeological fragments, and fantastical perspectives are set within expansive vistas animated by small figures, with mountains and skies rich in atmospheric lighting effects in the background. Painted in oil on canvas, the works are presented in their original frames. See less
