Oil on linen from Sweden dated 1951 painted by Ulla Borgström (1918-1999) a multifaceted Swedish artist recognized for her vibrant interiors and still lifes. Ulla Borgström was born in Malmö, Sweden she was the daughter of master painter Hilding Borgström. She received formal training at Skånska målarskolan in Malmö and the Otte Sköld school of painting in Stockholm. Her work often features expressive, confident brushwork and dynamic compositions in oil, pastel, and watercolor. Common themes include interiors (like the one shown), floral still lifes, and landscapes. She made her public debut in 1939 and regularly participated in exhibitions through Skånes konstförening. In her will, she established the Ulla Borgström Artist Foundation, which continues to award grants to artists in the Skåne
This painting is executed in an Expressionist and Post-Impressionist style with strong elements of fauvism and modernism. Key stylistic features include bold brushwork where the application of paint is thick and confident. Borgström uses visible, "painterly" strokes to build form which adds a textured, tactile quality to the surface. Following the influence of Post-Impressionists like Paul Cézanne, the composition is deliberately flattened. The floor and background wall appear as vertical planes, creating a sense of spatial ambiguity. Strong outlining of significant forms—like the blue vase and the dark, curving shape of the stove—are defined by heavy, dark outlines, a technique often used in Expressionism to anchor the composition. Despite the bold black form of the stove, the painting uses a "harmonious" color scheme that relies heavily on earthy yellows, dark blues, and cool greens, accented by the brighter violet of the flowers.

The painting is initialed and dated 1951 on the lower left front. The painting measures 19 and 3/4 inches wide by 39 and 1/2 inches wide framed to a size of 20 and 1/2 inches wide by 40 and 1 /4 high. The painting is in very good vintage condition with minimal vintage wear. The linen canvas is tight, intact and without repairs. There are a few dollops of paint on the canvas from the artist's expressive brushstrokes. Please refer to the last photo. It is framed in a primitive wooden strip frame that is painted black. The frame shows the usual vintage wear with areas of the black paint rubbed off but is presentable and adds to the charm of this painting.
