Flavio E. Cabral (American/Portuguese, 1916-1990), Seated Nude Oil on Masonite, signed and dated 1956 at lower left, presented in a period gilt frame with linen liner. Cabral was born in New York and moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1936. By the 1940s, he was heavily entrenched in the LA art scene where he was called "the Latin from Manhattan." He began his art studies with Christian von Schneidau while working with the Federal Art Project under the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Through his work there, he paved the way for artist including Pollock, Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Diego Rivera along with social activist and muralist David Siqueiros, who was also of Portuguese decent and who ultimately became Cabral's most important mentor. Through Siqueiros, Cabral received a fellowship to the esteemed Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City.
Cabral is known for his painted murals in public buildings, celebrity portraits, surreal works, and easel paintings in a unique style he developed and called Spherism.
He was a painter throughout his life and a long-time professor of painting and art history at Los Angeles Valley College.
