A rare and historically important 16th-century woodcut map of the Holy Land by the German theologian and cartographer Heinrich Bünting, originally published in 1581 in his celebrated biblical travel work Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (“Travel Book through Holy Scripture”). The map is titled in German Taffel des Heiligen Landes zu dem Newen Testament dienlich, translating roughly as “Map of the Holy Land Useful for the New Testament.” This striking early biblical map depicts the eastern Mediterranean region from the Mediterranean Sea (“Mare Mediterraneum”) to the Jordan River and lands beyond, illustrating the principal regions and sacred sites associated with the New Testament. Important biblical regions including Galilee, Samaria, Judea, and Jerusalem are prominently identified, alongside numerous cities, rivers, mountains, and settlements tied to biblical history. The map was designed as both a geographical and devotional aid, helping readers visualize the journeys and events described in the Scriptures.
Bünting’s works became among the most widely read and influential biblical geographical publications of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. His Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae, first issued in 1581, enjoyed enormous popularity across Protestant Europe and was repeatedly reprinted in various editions for decades. Heinrich Bünting (1545–1606) was a German Protestant pastor and theologian best known today for his imaginative biblical maps, especially the famous cloverleaf world map symbolizing the Christian world centered on Jerusalem. His maps combine late Renaissance cartographic traditions with strong theological and symbolic intent, making them highly desirable among collectors of early maps, biblical imagery, and Reformation-era prints. This example possesses the strong graphic character typical of early woodcut cartography. The bold linear style, simplified mountain forms, decorative city symbols, and typographic elegance give the map exceptional visual impact. The primitive and highly stylized appearance contributes greatly to its charm and historical importance. Original Bünting maps are increasingly sought after for their combination of early cartographic history, biblical significance, and decorative appeal. This Holy Land map works particularly well in libraries, studies, ecclesiastical interiors, or collections focused on Jerusalem, biblical history, or early maps of the Middle East. This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
Condition: Age-related toning, minor staining, and light wear consistent with age. Margins preserved with strong impression and attractive dark printing. Its bold graphic style and historical subject make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, ecclesiastical interiors, or sophisticated map collections.
