This finely engraved map of eastern canada was published by w. G. Blackie in scotland around 1860 and offers a detailed depiction of the maritime provinces and the eastern portion of british north america shortly before canadian confederation. The map encompasses new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island, parts of canada east (modern quebec), the gulf of st. Lawrence, and neighboring regions of maine and the northeastern united states. Produced during a period of rapid economic growth and political change, the map provides a fascinating snapshot of the region before the creation of the dominion of canada in 1867. Provincial boundaries are highlighted with original hand coloring, while towns, counties, rivers, lakes, roads, and emerging transportation routes are carefully engraved throughout the sheet. The extensive coastline is one of the map's most striking features. The rugged shores of nova scotia, the bay of fundy, the gulf of st. Lawrence, cape breton island, prince edward island, and the coast of new brunswick are depicted in remarkable detail. Numerous harbors, fishing settlements, and navigational landmarks reflect the importance of maritime trade, shipbuilding, fishing, and transatlantic commerce to the region's economy. Particularly noteworthy is the inclusion of prince edward island, shown separately and clearly delineated, as well as cape breton island, anticosti island, and the magdalen islands. The map also illustrates the interior river systems that played a crucial role in transportation, settlement, and the timber trade throughout the nineteenth century. Original hand coloring enhances both the aesthetic appeal and readability of the map, while the fine copper engraving reflects the high standards associated with blackie's celebrated atlas publications. The combination of geographical accuracy and elegant presentation makes this map both an important historical document and an attractive decorative piece. Today, original maps of canada's maritime provinces are highly sought after by collectors of canadian history, genealogy, colonial studies, maritime heritage, and antique cartography. This example would make an excellent addition to a collection, office, library, or canadian-themed interior.
