Paperweight and business card holder, designed by lino sabattini for argenteria sabattini, made of silver-plated metal and engraved with the name of actor josé ferrer. Italy, 1970s–1980s
origin italy
period 1970s–1980s
designer lino sabattini was born in correggio (reggio emilia) on september 23, 1925, to simple, hardworking parents\.\. At just fourteen years old, he found work in como at a workshop making everyday brass objects. It was no accident. Soon, he came across an issue of “domus,” gio’ ponti’s magazine. It became his textbook, his bible, his correspondence course. In the brassware shop, he earned a living, but he also learned metalworking techniques\.\. By the time he was thirty, sabattini left blevio to move to milan, where he set up a small workshop in a basement with the essential tools for his craft. His ties to “domus” grew stronger. He now also knew young architects, students of gio’ ponti. One of them brought the master a few metal objects created by the young craftsman. One day, ponti showed up at his door. He looked at them, touched them, and gave him an idea to develop. Just three days later, sabattini finished the piece. Ponti was thrilled. Thus began a friendship marked by pivotal moments\. From 1958 to 1963, he worked in paris and milan for the renowned christofle company, trying in vain to do away with worn-out, soulless productions. In 1964, he moved to bregnano, a small town between como and milan. He became an entrepreneur driven by his own ideas, his own sensibility, and that unique vision of his that found no place in the contemporary manufacturing world. Thus began his solitary adventure, which took shape as argenteria sabattini, where he created the most pure and graceful forms in silver. Source: linosabattini.com
