A captivating and character-rich oil painting from the Dutch Golden Age, 17th century.
This striking composition features two young boys rendered with exceptional psychological depth and masterful chiaroscuro lighting. The central figure, wearing a luxurious fur hat and holding a dagger, gazes directly at the viewer with a bold, introspective expression, while the younger boy plays a flute beside him. Executed with the lively, expressive brushwork typical of the Haarlem School, this work shows clear influence from Frans Hals — known for his dynamic portraits and tronies that capture the vitality and humanity of his subjects. Beautifully painted details include the soft texture of the fur, rich folds of the garments, and the luminous skin tones that emerge from the dark background.
Provenance: Formerly in a European private collection, purchased mid 20th century on the Austrian antiques market. The object has been in Europe for several decades, last owner antiques dealer of Vienna\.
