Large Biedermeier Wardrobe
Southern Germany
Walnut
circa 1820
Dimensions: H x W x D: 204 x 168 x 62 cm
:
Strictly cubist Biedermeier cabinet with a completely symmetrical bookmatching veneer pattern. By dispensing with ornamentation such as bronzes or carvings, the furniture is completely dominated by the effect of the surface.
The cross-veneered moulding serves as the mirror axis. from there, the grain continues to the left and right across the entire front and is also continued on the sides in the same veneer pattern.
The strict geometry of the furniture is also evident in the feet, which are the same width and an extension of the pilaster strips.
The discreet key plates in the shape of coats of arms are also made of walnut. The ebonised quarter moulding below the slightly protruding cornice provides a stronger contrast.
When we open the doors, we notice several remarkable details.
Firstly, the construction of the cabinet, which, contrary to its flat external appearance, is realised in a classic frame and panel design. The care taken by the cabinet maker is evident, among other things, in the fact that the individual structural timbers were provided with neatly crafted mouldings, so that the cabinet also makes a very good impression from the inside.
The metal parts on the inside are also particularly noteworthy. In addition to the solid box lock, for which the original key is still present, the locking brackets of the left-hand door are particularly noteworthy, as their solid yet fine workmanship testifies to the high quality standards of the cabinet maker and probably also the client at the time.
The division of the interior with centre panel and shelves is neatly executed, but does not date from the time the cabinet was made. We would be happy to equip the wardrobe with a clothes rail or other compartmentalisation according to your wishes.
The unit can be fully dismantled for transport:
-two doors
-cornice and plinth
-two sides
-three rear wall sections
