A single-door mirrored wardrobe in oak, crafted in the louis xvi revival style around 1900. The narrow front is clearly proportioned and calmly structured: fluted pilasters, a subtly carved frieze with a grape and leaf motif, and turned feet combine to create a harmonious and cohesive design. Historical context: single-door mirrored wardrobes emerged around the turn of the century for households that lacked space for a large, two-door wardrobe. They were frequently found in bedrooms, dressing rooms, or hallways of smaller middle-class apartments and served to store clothing and linens, while the mirrored door also functioned as a dressing mirror. The revival of classicist forms from the louis xvi period was widespread during the historicism movement; increasing mechanization allowed for the production of such furniture in solid quality for a wider range of consumers. Features: beveled mirror glass in the door. Drawer with visible, handcrafted dovetail joints.
design: stylistically belonging to the louis xvi revival. The design follows a clear vertical structure: fluted pilasters at the edges, a profiled cornice, a shallow carved frieze with grape and leaf tendrils in the upper section, and turned feet. Construction and ornamentation are formally coordinated and remain understated in effect. Function: formerly used as a wardrobe and linen cupboard in bedrooms or hallways. Today, it can be used as a coat rack or storage cupboard; the mirrored door is also suitable for a hallway or dressing room. Dimensions: height 208 cm × width 105 cm × depth 52 cm. Material and condition: solid oak body. Door with beveled mirror glass. Preserved in keeping with its age, with a subtle patina and visible signs of age-related wear. Drawer with key and brass-colored escutcheon. Signs of age and use are part of its historical character.
