Six-piece chair set in the Historicist style, dating from around 1890. The chairs appear clearly structured and proportionally balanced, with the carved corner mascarons and the balustrade beneath the backrest providing controlled vertical emphasis to the otherwise serene design. Historical Context: During the Gründerzeit (the period of rapid industrial expansion in Germany in the late 19th century), the growing prosperity of the middle class led to a strong demand for prestigious furniture based on historical models. Carved, tapestry-covered chair sets of this type were typical furnishings for middle-class dining rooms, where, as part of a uniformly designed seating arrangement, they combined representation and domestic style. Features: A bronze-colored, turned carrying handle is located on the upper back of each chair, facilitating movement and pulling. The upper corners of the backrests are crafted as carved mascarons (grotesque figurative heads). Design: The chairs follow the Historicist formal vocabulary of the Gründerzeit with hints of Neo-Renaissance. The defining features are the turned legs and stretchers, the balustrade gallery beneath the upholstered back, and the carved, fluted pilasters on the sides. The continuous brass nailhead trim frames the upholstered surfaces and further articulates the front. Function: Originally crafted as prestigious dining room or parlor seating, the set is now equally suitable as a flexible seating group for dining and living areas.
Dimensions: Overall height 96 cm × Width 44 cm × Depth 41 cm; Seat height 47 cm; Number: 6 chairs. Material and condition: Upholstered in a floral tapestry fabric, edged with brass decorative nails. The tapestry is in very good condition. The frames are sturdy and well-preserved for their age, with patina and occasional signs of wear that contribute to their historical character.
