Historical Context: During the Gründerzeit (the period of rapid industrial expansion in Germany in the late 19th century), the growing prosperity of the middle class led to a strong demand for prestigious furniture based on historical models. Carved, tapestry-covered chair sets of this type were typical furnishings for middle-class dining rooms, where, as part of a uniformly designed seating arrangement, they combined representation and domestic style. Features: A bronze-colored, turned carrying handle is located on the upper back of each chair, facilitating movement and pulling. The upper corners of the backrests are crafted as carved mascarons (grotesque figurative heads). Design: The chairs follow the Historicist formal vocabulary of the Gründerzeit with hints of Neo-Renaissance.
