The architecturally structured front is clearly proportioned, with calmly placed half-columns and a subtly emphasized structure that lends the narrow body a cohesive and unified appearance. Historical context: narrow, tall cabinets with only one door emerged in the second half of the 19th century as space-saving storage furniture for middle-class households. They served to store linens and clothing in bedrooms or dressing rooms, with the mirrored door simultaneously functioning as a dressing mirror. With the industrial furniture production of the gründerzeit, such pieces were manufactured in larger numbers, combining mass production with handcrafted details and historicist decorative elements. Features: door with beveled mirror glass, which exhibits a distinctly aged patina from the silvering. Drawers with hand-crafted dovetail joints and softwood runners. Design: the piece adheres to the design language of the gründerzeit and late historicism periods. The front is vertically emphasized and articulated by fluted half-columns with carved consoles; cube-shaped corner motifs are set in the upper frieze, topped by a profiled cornice. The lower section is finished with flattened ball feet. The brass drawer fittings display neo-rococo rocaille forms. Overall, it presents a cohesive, symmetrical design with clean lines. Function: formerly used as a linen and wardrobe in the bedroom, with the mirrored door serving as a dressing mirror. Today, it can be used as a hallway, linen, or storage cupboard; the interior offers height-adjustable shelves, and the mirror remains functional. Dimensions: h 209 × w 112 × d 53 cm. Material and condition: walnut, partly solid, partly veneered; the drawer fronts with lively grained veneer. Mirror glass with a mature patina and age-related changes to the silvering. A piece preserved in keeping with its age, showing visible signs of use; structurally sound. Signs of age and use are part of its historical character. See less
