an elegant pair of oil paintings on panel depicting traditional and rustic scenes, titled “basque customs,” created by the spanish painter c. Vidaime around the beginning of the 20th century.
in the first work, we find a scene of fieldwork, what appears to be the felling of trees, judging by the axe held by the upright figure, and the logs lying on the ground. In the second painting, a bullfighting scene depicts a human figure seemingly running in front of two bulls, while behind them, three figures resembling the bullfighting team surround them, ready to intervene. The style of the works is simple, without a defined background, and painted with very subtle, streaked brushstrokes, likely due to the texture of the brushes used. Costumbrismo (regionalist painting) was an artistic trend or movement that reflected the customs and traditions of society, specifically those of a particular region or country, and its traditional folklore. It emerged in europe, especially in spain and france, during the 18th and 19th centuries. It sought to portray daily life, often focusing on the popular classes, both rural and urban, capturing moments that reflected cultural identity, folklore, and local customs. Typically, the subjects were not great historical figures, but rather ordinary people. In spain, costumbrismo (the depiction of everyday life in spain) experienced remarkable development, especially in the 19th century, as a response to the rapid social and economic changes brought about by industrialization.
the artworks are presented framed in black wood, carved with moldings and a rectangular braided texture. The last section closest to the panel is gilded, a way of drawing attention to the pieces. This piece has an attribution mark,
