A handsome silver-plated reflector candle lamp, english, late 19th to early 20th century.
the stepped circular base supports twin turned columns surmounted by a segmented parabolic reflector with oval aperture and twin candle sockets. Constructed principally in silver-plate on copper, the reflector displays pleasing areas of exposed copper where the plating has worn, creating an attractive contrast, complemented by brass edging details. Each candle sits within a sleeve and is supported by a spring-loaded mechanism, allowing it to remain at an effective height as the candle burns.
the base is engraved with a presentation inscription dated july 1913 to j. Huck, m.a., from the members of the st bees choral society, adding an interesting historical association.
beautifully crafted and robust. The neatly formed reflector panels and rear canister cast a wonderful warm light when illuminated, providing both a practical source of candlelight and a charming atmospheric glow.
condition: very good and ready to place. Age-related wear including surface marks, polishing scratches and rubbing to the silver-plate, with copper showing through in places. Minor dents and blemishes commensurate with age and use.
the inscription relates to j. Huck, m.a., a master at st bees school, cumbria, and a prominent figure in the local community. Contemporary records identify him as the school's science master and as "captain huck", reflecting his role within the school's cadet corps during the years immediately preceding the first world war. The last photo shows a photo of captain huck second from the right in the back row.

founded in 1583 by archbishop edmund grindal, st bees school is one of the oldest schools in england. By 1913, when this lamp was presented by the members of the st bees choral society, the school and village enjoyed a thriving cultural and musical life. The presentation offers an evocative glimpse into the close-knit community of st bees on the eve of the great war.
