An original vintage photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian, Portfolio VIII (published 1911) — one of Curtis's celebrated Columbia River fishing scenes. A Wishram fisherman works a long-handled dip-net over the rushing water, the rocky shore and luminous sky behind him. Curtis described how an experienced fisherman knew the quiet pools where salmon rested from their upstream journey, taking his toll from each with a deft movement of the net.
Printed on Japanese gampi tissue — the rarest and most expensive of the three handmade papers Curtis used, reserved for the deluxe edition (only a few dozen complete sets) — chine-collé mounted, as issued, to its original Holland Van Gelder support sheet. A large folio portfolio plate, plate-printed in Boston by John Andrew & Son after Curtis's 1909 copyright photograph.
A genuine period printing, not a later restrike.
Inscriptions, as issued in the plate: Plate 275 (upper left); DIP-NETTING IN POOLS — WISHHAM (lower left); From Copyright Photograph 1909 by E.S. Curtis (lower center); Photogravure John Andrew & Son (lower right).

The image presents excellently — strong, evenly inked impression with rich atmospheric tonality and crisp registration; full deckle edges, no trimming; no tears, creases, or losses; plate inscriptions crisp and legible. The verso bears a University of Tennessee Library stamp in purple ink with a shelf notation, and a pencil inventory notation ("CCI 3104"), both outside the image area, reflecting the sheet's earlier institutional and collection provenance. Minor natural undulation to the tissue is inherent to the medium. Unframed. less
