An original vintage photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's monumental The North American Indian. Hupa Jumping Dance Costume is a close, unhurried portrait of a Hupa elder in full ceremonial regalia — dentalium and shell ornaments layered across the chest, a soft fur headdress framing a face Curtis lets carry its own years and quiet authority. The Jumping Dance is one of the great World-Renewal ceremonies of the Hupa people of the Hoopa Valley in northwestern California, and this 1923 sitting is among the most affecting images in the project's later California volumes.
Plate 442 from Portfolio XIII (published 1924), printed by the Suffolk Engraving Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, after Curtis's copyright photograph of 1923. It is printed on genuine Japanese gampi tissue — the rarest and most costly of the three handmade papers Curtis used, prized for the luminous depth and fine tonal gradation it lends the sepia image. Titled in the plate lower left (HUPA JUMPING DANCE COSTUME), with the 1923 copyright and Suffolk credit inscribed below the image.
Provenance: The Christopher G. Cardozo Collection — the foremost private collection of Curtis's work — with the collection's inventory number (CGC-1612x) in pencil to the verso. Now in private Colorado collection

It is not in its original Holland Van Gelder mount: at a later date the tissue was lifted and remounted onto a replacement backing (a quality archival cotton printmaking sheet). The remount is clean, stable, and non-damaging, but is not the print's original presentation, and the piece is priced accordingly — well below comparable original-mount examples. Image presents beautifully with rich, even sepia tone. Sold unframed. less
