There is a quiet confidence to this coffee table, where sculptural form and material presence come together with restraint. The combination of smoked glass and rosewood creates a balance between weight and transparency, allowing the construction beneath the glass to remain fully visible. Its low and expansive silhouette recalls the experimental French interiors of the 1970s, where organic forms and architectural furniture increasingly merged.
Design
The table is constructed from five interlocking veneered rosewood elements that radiate outward from a central point, creating a star-like base with strong geometric rhythm. Each leg curves upward in a soft arc, supporting the circular smoked glass top with a sense of tension and suspension. Seen from different angles, the structure shifts between organic and architectural, revealing new contours and shadows across the surface.
Particularly notable is the quality of the rosewood veneer, which displays vivid grain patterns and tonal depth throughout the base. The dark timber contrasts subtly with the green-grey hue of the smoked glass, creating a layered composition that changes under natural light. Rather than concealing the construction, the design celebrates the interaction between the materials, allowing the negative space between the legs to become part of the overall composition.
The table carries characteristics associated with French modernist production from the 1970s, a period in which sculptural wooden forms and smoked glass surfaces became increasingly prominent in high-end interiors. There are echoes of the organic approach seen in French decorative arts of the era, where furniture often balanced functionality with a more expressive silhouette. Its proportions allow the piece to function comfortably as a central coffee table, though it equally operates as a sculptural presence within a carefully composed interior.
A composition guided by proportion, craftsmanship and material contrast rather than ornament, resulting in a table with a calm but distinctive character.
Condition
The condition of the table is very good with minor signs of age and use consistent with time. The smoked glass top shows some light surface scratches visible under certain lighting conditions, while the rosewood veneer remains well preserved with an even patina.
