Lowe, 1856 – Set of 6 A refined and visually striking collection of six original hand-colored botanical lithographs depicting rare exotic fern species, published in London by the celebrated Victorian botanist Edward Joseph Lowe in 1856. These elegant studies originate from Lowe’s important fern publications, among the finest botanical works produced during the height of the 19th-century British fascination with ferns, tropical plants, and natural history. The suite includes detailed representations of Polypodium Hemionitideum (Strap Fern), Polypodium Pustulatum (Spotted Fern), Polypodium Gracilis / P. Repens (Delicate Fern and Creeping Fern), Polypodium Quercifolium (Oak-Leaf Fern), Polypodium Subpetiolatum (Feather Fern), and Polypodium Areolatum (Tropical Ladder Fern). The remarkable diversity of forms — from elongated ribbon-like fronds to deeply segmented tropical foliage — creates a highly decorative and almost modern botanical composition. Each lithograph was carefully hand-colored, emphasizing the texture of the fronds, delicate vein structures, and ornamental spore patterns that fascinated Victorian collectors during the era of “Pteridomania.” The restrained palette of soft greens and earthy tones gives the set exceptional decorative versatility, making it suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Edward Joseph Lowe was one of the leading British naturalists of the Victorian era and became internationally recognized for his pioneering works on ferns and horticulture. His botanical illustrations successfully combined scientific precision with artistic elegance, making them highly sought after today by collectors of antique botanical prints, natural history enthusiasts, and interior designers. This cohesive set displays beautifully as a gallery wall arrangement and works particularly well in libraries, garden rooms, conservatories, boutique hotels, or refined modern interiors inspired by organic forms and natural textures. The prints are original antique lithographs, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good overall condition with light age toning, scattered minor spotting, and occasional edge wear consistent with age. Several sheets show small marginal imperfections and binding traces at the edges. Colors remain fresh and attractive throughout. Framing tips: Displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, museum black, or natural oak frames paired with wide ivory or oatmeal-toned mats. Particularly effective when arranged in symmetrical grids or salon-style botanical installations.
