Its hollow shape, inspired by volcanic craters, is partially glazed — creating a play of light and reflection that contrasts with the raw rock. The volcanic rock holds within it the memory of the earth that formed it. Its dense, porous material tells the story of ancient lava flows, of reliefs shaped by fire and then softened by time. Every ridge evokes this rugged landscape. Basalte and caldera are stone lamps born from the volcanoes of the auvergne region. Their shape and material evoke a singular territory: the chaîne des puys, a unesco world heritage site. These lava stone lamps seem born from an earth pushed to its extreme — like sun-baked soil, cracked and dry. Their rough, almost charred texture retains the memory of ancient heat, frozen into every ridge and hollow. They diffuse a restrained light, like that which floods arid landscapes without ever softening them. In their unglazed form, they become silent objects, carrying within them the traces of a land marked by hardship — where matter endures, but where life is scarce, suspended in anticipation of rain. The glazed versions evoke the memory of water, its blue reflections shifting like a promise, like hope. Clemence birot started her career in copenhagen, denmark, and discovered a design practice closely related to craftsmanship. The latter plays an avant-garde role. Motivated by a free artistic practice and enriched by its know-how, it dictates the exploratory and innovative dynamic in the design process. Thus, in the design studios she worked for, she frequently collaborated with artisans for product development (tableware, interior accessories). Their know-how led her to the constant research of a unique result where the material is respected and, despite technical challenges, always in focus. The material itself occupies this central place throughout the whole project. Back in france, she holds on to this collaborative approach with craftsmen, whether for the initial phases of creation or for bespoke piece production. At a time of mass production, the product origin is often vague, far from our territories and our values. Today, clemence wishes to go further in this process of enhancing hand intelligence and unique know-how while producing ethically and locally. In this spirit, she develops a range of objects in small series with clean shapes, through which she claims this attachment to natural and sustainable materials, a timeless design far from industrial standards. All these objects are manufactured in france or in europe, as close as possible to the places of the raw materials production, by craftsmen with outstanding know-how.
