Along this stretch of England’s southern coastline, a vast expanse of sand meets a remarkably shallow shoreline. Even at low tide, it is possible to walk far out into the sea and still remain only waist deep. As the tide recedes, it reveals intricate patterns of rippled sand and shallow pools of water, creating a landscape that can resemble a wind-sculpted desert. On this particular day, heavy cloud hung overhead and rain began to fall. The light diminished, flattening and compressing the scene until the exposed sands took on a dark, almost sooty appearance. Familiar colours disappeared, leaving behind a pared-back study of tone, texture and form. The result is an image that feels both abstract and poetic — a fleeting transformation of a well-known landscape into something altogether more enigmatic.
