19th Century Dated Persian Qajar Tinned Copper Ewer Ablution Basin Set, Dated 1878.
A complete two-piece Islamic ablution set consisting of a tall, elegant ewer (aftabeh) and its matching deep-welled drainage basin. Hand-raised from sheet copper and heavily coated in traditional tin plating.
A flattened bulbous body rests on a flared conical foot ring. A gracefully arched spout and a solid curved handle lead to a thumb-hinged dome lid with a spear-head finial. The body is masterfully hand-chased on both sides. The matching wide-rimmed basin features deep, hand-hammered scalloped fluting and engraving. It retains its rare, original removable central drainage plate, beautifully executed in intricate openwork piercing to filter wastewater.
The ewer's handle features hand-engraved cartouches in Persian script:
Left Cartouche: Inscribed with ownership details.
Right Cartouche: Dated "790 diu" (Sanat 1295), (circa 1878 AD), late Qajar period.
Condition:
The set is in very good/excellent, complete antique condition, retaining both its original lid hinge pin and its matching openwork basin plate. The surface displays an uncleaned charcoal-grey oxidation and verdigris patina. Natural, authentic wear down to the underlying copper core. Minor age-related surface pitting and minor lid-fit asymmetry consistent with hand-forged metalwork of the late 19th century.
Dimensions:
Ewer H 16.5”x W 11” x D 4.75”
Basin Diameter 12”x H 5.5”
Total height 20”.
