So far as we have undertaken to these findings, this is the first of 250 works to make it to the open market, by the late New York City dealer turned primitive Folk Art artist Abraham (Abe) Feit. This work was produced in late 1960 for the Christmas season, and a month later the artist would pass away. Here's what his New York Times Jan 19, 1961 obituary announced:
"Abraham Feit, a painter of primitives and an art and antiques dealer, died Tuesday in New York Hospital after a short illness.
He was 72 years old and lived at 222 East Fifty-sixth Street. Mr. Feit, who was sometimes called the "Grandma Moses of Second Avenue," exhibited his work in the Upper Gallery of Feit of London, 1105 Second Avenue. He began painting in 1957 and produced 250 works."
Like you, this is all we know about him and his work at the moment; and this is the first work our eyes have laid eyes on. The 24" x 18" imagery is of a joyful Christmas wintery scene; and it was given as a gift to "Mr & Mrs Frank Tracey & Family". It's inscribed on verso.
The painting depicts a village in the winter Christmas season, with two red housing structures, an enclosing fence with benches, a bridge, and much ice-skating taking place. Kids and adults on the ice dancing around, or on sleds, with some led by horses. He truly captured the spirit of Christmas. It is signed on the right bottom corner: "A. Feit".
Do note that the canvas could use a cleaning, if you so desire, of course. If you pay attention to the top edge, where a frame was, the blue we believe is what all the green portion should be. As is is already gorgeous and if you decide to clean it professionally you'll only be adding value to it. We just ask that you share a picture with us when you do so.
